Defense Grid: The Awakening was created by Mark Terrano, the same individual who led the design for Age of Empires II and uses the same Gamebryo engine that was used in Civilization IV and The Elder Scrolls IV.
In general, tower defense games are very similar with one another especially in terms on how the game is played. The main difference is the manner to which each of the games is presented to the gaming public.
Defense Grid: The Awakening is quite simple to understand. The player’s goal is to defend the power cores by using ten kinds of towers that are available in the game namely: gun, cannon, inferno, laser, tesla, missile, command, temporal, concussion and meteor. Just like any other tower defense game, every tower has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is up to the player to decide how to use the tower’s capabilities to gain game advantage. Other objectives of the game include killing as many enemies as you can to earn valuable resources that the player can use either to build additional towers or to upgrade existing towers up to three higher levels. The game was designed in such a way that the player will have to battle 15 different kinds of antagonists presenting numerous kinds of obstacles and problems.
The game’s milieu is set sometime in the future where the players are required to protect whatever was left from a once mighty civilization against an alien threat. In short, the aliens should not be allowed to get hold of the power cores at all cost. Each level of the game presents various scenarios that the player can use to create the most secure tower defense necessary to keep the enemies away. The game ends if the aliens are able to take all the power cores.
As an added difficulty, alien enemies come in many variations such as the juggernauts, shielded juggernauts, decoys and turtle aliens. Defeating them is not going to be easy but not impossible. Defense Grid: The Awakening requires a combination of offensive and defensive strategies to come out victorious.
When it comes to the technical part, the visual aspect of the game is not that astonishing. Over all, Defense Grid: The Awakening is above average compared to the other games with the same genre.
