First-person shooting is among the most popular genres of computer games. It was immensely popular especially when the game Counter Strike was introduced for the PC. Then, lots of other first-person shooting games arrived not only for the PC, but also for other gaming consoles. At present there are various game titles that you can choose from with the first-person shooting genre. But not all of them are really good. Section 8, if defined in the old US military parlance, would have meant getting dismissed from duty because of mental instability. But in Time Gate Studio’s Section 8, it is the nickname of the 8th Armored Infantry. The 8th Armored Infantry is an elite group of soldiers. They are the first soldiers to literally jump in into any galactic hotspots. They literally jump of their feet and drop thousands of feet from their orbiting carrier without even using a parachute, and still land while creating a small impact. This jump is known on the game as “burning in”.
Section 8’s single player has yet to be revealed. However, they have revealed a bit of the story: In the far-off future, the Arm of Orion, which is a rebel group, begins an attack on Earth’s terrains. As a soldier on Section 8, it is your job to exterminate these rebels by “burning in” to diverse planets.
As for the multiplayer game, the PC version can support up to 32 players while the console versions (PS3 and XBOX 360) can support up to 16 players. AI bots will fill up the space of maximum players but anyone can join a game anytime, replacing one of the AI bots. A new player can “burn in” on any place on the map but “burning in” on the enemy’s territory could result to being shot down immediately.
The game does not offer classes of soldiers like sniper, medic, etc. However, you can change the stats of your character so that they can become proficient in a stat that you want. Stats like stealth, shield, ammo and damage can be changed. With this feature, each character can certainly be unique. You can even change your stats when you re-spawn or when you find supply depots on the field.
Once the game begins, Section 8 is like a typical first-person shooting game. There are two bases in a large map which you must capture and control. A base has turrets and missile launches which will automatically fire against your enemies once you have captured the base. You earn points for capturing a base, which you can use to buy tactical support such as a mech-like robot equipped with a machine gun, a four-person tank and sensors that jam enemy signals.
Another great feature on the multiplayer game is the dynamic combat missions. These missions are randomly generated by an AI. You will be assigned to complete these missions. Missions include assassinating an AI-spawned opponent, escorting a convoy, destroying a convoy and much more.
